Mental health / Psychiatric nursing is the specialty area of nursing that focus on the promotion of mental health, prevention of mental illness and rehabilitate the client with mental illness. The students to assist in developing expertise and in depth understanding in the field of psychiatric nursing. It will help the students to appreciate the client as a holistic individual and develop skills to function psychiatric nurse specialist it will further enable the students to function as educator, manager and researcher in the field of psychiatric nursing.

The vision of Mental Health / Psychiatric Nursing Department is to actively strive for excellence in education, practice and research related to meet the mental health needs of the individual, family and community. It also strengthen and maximize the potential of nursing to ensure that it is fit for purpose in a dynamic and evolving health care context .

The mission of the psychiatric (Mental health) Nursing department is to provide quality nursing for preparing professionals towards optimizing mental health of the People in an ever changing health care environment .

The faculty is also believes in evidenced based research activities that enhances quality of services and overall development of nursing students in part with national and international standards by focusing on Psychiatric related problems.

Conducting Psycho-education and interactive sessions for inpatients and family members.

Participation of World Mental Health Day, World Suicide Prevention Day and World Alzheimer’s Day, drug abuse day and yoga day. Our students had participated in rally, essay writing and different events with the coordination of other institutions.

Regular CNE, SEMINARS, WORKSHOPS has been conducted every year by the department.

Individual counseling session in Fraternal Life Service Home for Mental Illness in Ousteri and Dhanvantri Institute of Mental Illness, Ariyankuppam. Providing various therapies to all collaborated centers and Psychiatric Inpatient unit, MGMCRI .

Case Methods

In case method of teaching students reviews a real world situation (a case) that poses a thought provoking dilemma or problem. Students are placed in the role of decision maker and asked how they would resolve the problem
